Monsters in these lands are beautiful, very bright and colorful and usually have a gift, and they destroy humans. Since half of Fire is human, she has to hide her beautiful red hair at all times and live heavily guarded. Her gift is that she can read and control minds. Because of her gift, she is useful at court. However, she is not well-received by the King and his brother. Fire's monster father played a heavy hand in the death of the previous king and they don't trust her. Fire may be half monster, but her humanity overcomes that part of her. She's kind and brave. In the beginning of Fire, we meet young Leek, who is quite unstable. He's a Graceling who has come through the mountains to the dells unexpectedly. He's cruel and manipulative and has a gift similar to Fire's; the gift of reading and controlling minds. His ambition will cause dissent with Fire and her world that will lead us to a compelling and twisting conclusion. Fire is a great fantasy adventure! The characters are well developed and the world is built in such a fantastic way that it's easy to follow and becomes believable. Magical creatures, great battles, political intrigue, a splash of romance, and supernatural abilities mesh so well together that you have a sure-fire hit! Kristin Cashore has done a remarkable job! Her uncle, the king, uses her as his personal enforcer, sending her out to hurt those who displease him. On one such trip, Katsa encounters a young man, a prince from a neighboring country, and after that, their fates will be entwined as she must learn to use her abilities compassionately and not as her Uncle's thug. But he has a secret grace and she will be drawn into politics of the world on a grand scale. This is a stand alone though there are two other books in this same world (one a prequel of sorts and the other a sequel but both with different characters). I did feel the book floats around quite a bit and lacks a good solid structure. As well, it can get tiring hearing Katsa echo the same thoughts over and over. Yes, we get the idea you don't want to marry. No, we don't need all the guys falling all over you even though you're supposedly deadly. Tammy Jo is having a bad week, a really bad week and despite her lack of magical abilities finds herself mixed up in more hocus-pocus than she can handle. And some of it is just plain funny. The humour is what makes the book worth reading. Tammy Jo has a sharp wit and her sarcasm is a joy to partake in. The book does feel a little chaotic at times, with Tammy Jo trying to accomplish multiple tasks at the same time, with no real understanding of what is going on around her. Plus, the world-building is a little on the slim side. But, all-in-all, it's a fun little ride. And while the whole werewolf mystery is cleared up, this is still very much a first book in a series. There are a number of threads left loose and a lot of unanswered or unaddressed questions. This left me feeling dissatisfied right at the end. I'm also at a bit of a loss about the Bryn/Zach situation. I like both men, despite their serious control issues (Zach especially). It's not quite a love triangle, but is too close to be comfortable. There's little chance of either one escaping unscathed and I find myself cringing at the prospects.",0,0 495c1210a9dbd819cbf7717dfb8b217f,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,6264661,,,00:00.0,5,"Cassel, was a character that I was looking forward to and grew on me as the book grew to and end. He starts out as a criminal, and a thrifty conman. He was raised to believe in the con, and almost know what who had the upper hand. However, in the beginning you'll realize he's in college and away from his family. Which apparently is good for Cassel, his mother is out for whatever is best for her and her family and his brothers are trying to protect Cassel, even if they aren't going about it the best way. At first on the surface I thought the book was going to be about conmen and the thrifty lives they lead. However, I was wrong. The book is partially dealt with than conman lifestyles and than there is the Curse Workers lifestyle. Cruse Workers are different depending on what ""gift"" you have been given. In Cassel's mother's case it's emotion. She makes anyone feel how she needs to, to get the job done. There are those who can work memories and than those who can transform objects. Those who can transform are rare and the most sought after, however when one of the characters posses that ability the whole game changes. Cassell is different, he mourns the fact that he's not a curse worker at all, and in a family where everyone is a worker he's left alone. It also doesn't change the haunting nightmare he has every night, the dream of him killing his best friend and possibly first girlfriend. Furthermore I found that the second character I fell in love with was a White Cat that follows Cassell around and helps him along his journey. As Cassell, tries to figure out who he is supposed to find, and what's going on in his life, the White Cat remains by his side. I wanted more out of the world, and what it had to offer. I enjoyed the college school scenery and it made the school seem large and welcoming. However out in the world the only world and the only house that seemed worthwhile was the house that Cassel grew up in. The cluttered mess, and the worn down house gave a great backstory to Cassel that a few paragraphs could have explained. Yet how he got around was dumbed down to just driving his car from point A to point B. We see over and over Holly Black can create great worlds, so why doesn't she going from points to points. This book won't let you down, in fact it's a great read and a great relaxation piece. I was hooked immediately and if you are remotely interested, or sounds like something you might find interesting. I would almost garauntee that you'll enjoy this book. I didn't even both to read the summary very closely. I was that certain I would dislike it based on the cover and title alone. In my defense, the title is a little misleading. It's different and makes the reader think that the book will be a light, quick vampire story. It was completely by chance that I saw it at a little used bookstore and decided to examine it more closely. To my great surprise, it actually sounded kind of interesting so I sat down and read the first few chapters. I continued to like it, so I bought it and stayed up half the night to finish. There was something seriously addicting about this novel; I never wanted to put it down, always very eager to see how it would end. So I guess I could say that my favorite thing about Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side would be the pacing. It's not on the short side, nor is it particularly long; rather, it tells exactly what it needs to and ends at a satisfying point. Though I did like how it ended, I'm still very excited to pick up the sequel and see what the author has in store for these people. Honestly, I loved Jessica's character. She was just a normal teenage girl in the start of the book, and of course she evolves by the end - what with finding out she's a vampire princess and all - but at the same time, she remains much the same in many ways. She reminded me a little of Meghan from the Iron Fey series; she, too, found out she was a princess (a faerie one, but still). Both of them grow up on a farm, as well. Jessica did have moments here and there where she acted kind of stupidly - though she stands up to her love interest a bit, she doesn't do it often enough. Lucius (I just recently learned how to pronounce his name, by the way) immediately had my attention from the first time he showed up. Of course, the reader is already aware of what he his and his purposes, but he changes throughout the book almost as much as Jessica does. He bounces back and forth between one extreme to the other, and I kind of felt like he should have a big hug. The chemistry with Jessica (a.k.a. Anastasia) definitely wasn't lacking; there are some steamy moments here, and they were well written and much appreciated. And the letters he writes to his uncle are hilarious. Fantaskey's version of a vampire was interesting. I like the way she built her world with the royalty aspect, but at the same time, I'm confused about how the undead can have children (but then, I'm still confused about that aspect of Twilight, so.). I wasn't extremely fond of the side characters - I've heard that Mindy starts narrating some of the time in Jessica Rules the Dark Side, and I have to admit that I was none too thrilled with that. She was an okay character, but I'm not so sure I want to see the story through her eyes. I did, however, enjoy the relationship Jessica had with her parents, and the conflicts brought about by Faith and Jake. I was pretty surprised by the novel took towards the end - I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll say I was surprised that who I thought would be the main villain of the book turned out not to be. Overall, I'm just going to go with the classic saying - don't judge a book by its cover (or its title, for that matter), because I'm really glad I picked this up.",0,0 d4551ad7db0890faca5479b502028f82,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,14449475,,,00:00.0,5,"We start off with Ky. I was surprised with the ease in which the book finished. I've read plenty of other dystopian trilogies, and found the endings, including Mockingjay and Requiem, left me feeling angry and confused. The endings were rushed, problematic, and unsatisfying. I will admit that I didn't have a high bar of expectations, but I felt like Allegiant satisfied some of the ""loose ends"" of the society without leaving gaping plot holes. I felt I understood how the characters came to the decisions they did, and how the world in which the characters live resolved. SPOILERS!!! I was disappointed, but not completely aghast at the death in the end. I sort of expected it to be one or the other, though I was shocked and didn't believe it until they actually saw the body. I wish things could have ended differently, but I think the character's choices definitely made sense to put this person to his/her eventual end! Being that I was done with paranormal, I was hoping that this book would be different. It is different. But for me, it still carried that same feel to a vampire book. Plot: I think my biggest problem of the book didn't really capture me. The plot is about a girl, who is living in a time of vampire. They can turn people but you can also go cold. Which means you get a vampire sickness but after a few month of no blood and isolation, you can turn back to human. This plot goes from her childhood to her now, in which she faces some hard times. Truthfully, there were quite a few references to characters in that series and it took place parallel to 'Lothaire' so that I would strongly recommend that the IAD series be read first. This is the story of one of Lothaire's Dacian family members, Trehan Daciano, and of the half-demon/half-Sorceri Bettina who is the Royal Princess of a demon realm. Trehan is an assassin who lives to do his duty to his people. His duty takes him into the Death Demon realm tracking a demon who broke the biggest Daciano law which involves protecting the secret of his people's existence and how to find them by never letting anyone who enters their realm leave. At the same time, Bettina is up against being a prize along with her kingdom to the winner of a 'to the death winner take all' tournament. It came about because she was attacked in the human realm by Vrekeners and syphoned of her magic and left near death. Her godparents have decided that she is too vulnerable alone so seek a strong protector for her mate. Bettina agrees with this in exchange for her godparents to exact revenge on her attackers and get her magic back. However, now that the event is upon her, she is terrified to be stuck with one of the horrifying candidates who have come to win the prize of the kingdom. She has hope that her friend Cas will save her by mating her before the event, but he makes it clear that he only wants friendship with her and has troubles of his own. When Bettina drunkenly mistakes Trehan for Cas, it starts a whole new chain of events. Cas is the target of Trehan and Bettina is Trehan's 'Bride'. And things get real interesting when both Cas and Trey enter the tourny. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but there is one part that I wasn't entirely sold on- Bettina. Now don't get me wrong, I liked Betttina. I just struggled with her being Trehan's Bride at times. She's so young and acts her age and he's so ancient. It had more fighting elements, new relationships, both business, personal, in and out of the Brotherhood, as well as, some rocking sex scenes!! Blay and Qhuinn definitely knows how to get it on. Honestly, I could read them having sex all damn day! I got a little shy, when the public sentimental moments came about, but that is a testament to how connected I am to these characters. I just love these guys! Despite their few moments, I am glad for them. It didn't seemed forced. We got just the right amount of their story, and everyone else. We also got some Beth time, and I sure miss the original female of this series. She seems so regal and untouchable now, that I just want to connect with the Beth who lived alone with Boo. Even Bella had her moment. Once again, Zsadist almost died in the field, and that brought about and epic moment. It was serious, sentimental and funny in one. This was not your typical vampire tale so don't idly dismiss it. I thought it was a stroke of genius when Stoker was offered a chance to gain ""personal experience"" to improve his next novel. The concept is brilliant. The idea is that Stoker's ""Dracula"" was a deliberate cover-up to conceal the truth about the existence of vampires to prevent mass panic. As the public is gullible, it worked beautifully. That alone was intriguing, yet after reading it I can tell you it is so much more. It a melting pot of so many cool elements: steampunk Victorian London, vampires, werewolves, Bram Stoker, and the Legend of King Arthur. WHAT?! I was the most shocked when it was revealed that King Arthur was entwined with this unique story. Very engaging.",0,0 350f561ab4530ad1f0eaaaa9832724f7,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,21536663,,,00:00.0,5,"Romantic love is looking decidedly less romantic when the fey are involved. Ethan Chase (human) and his part fey nephew Keirran are in parallel dilemmas where the girl they each love is dying. On Ethan's side, Kenzie is desperate to experience life, when everyone else is trying to keep her safe so she can die...safely. No wonder she's annoyed. However, the focus of the story is on Keirran's attempts to save Annwyl, who is Fading. Someone really needed to put both boys into a Business 101 class because neither of them seem capable of negotiating. An in the Nevernever, negotiation is a survival tool. Desperation drives both of them to do some pretty terrible things, and much as they would like to rationalize it away as a necessity of circumstance, the horrors they inflict are really personal choice. The situation is only made horrible by their refusal to let go and accept loss. The unwillingness to make personal sacrifices means that much else is sacrificed and this will have far reaching consequences. This was an interesting book because I did not like the choices that Ethan was making, though I understood them. I could also see how the best of intentions could become twisted - we are often dragged into compromising positions by those we care about. This is a dark, interesting story that speaks to the uglier side of human/fae nature. In the second installment of the Blood of Eden series, we are once again thrown into the dark and thrilling world of savage rabids, vicious mole men, bloodthirsty vampires and a growing romance that cannot be. There is no doubt that Julie Kagawa is an incredible writer. The Eternity Cure is everything I expected it to be. It was written flawlessly, unraveling the story in a way you'd want to savor and anticipate. There was never a dull moment. The Eternity Cure is a kickass, action packed, engaging book. I was completely absorbed in every twist and turn of the story. This book has a lot in store for us readers - would-make-you-open-mouthed, unexpected twists, betrayals that would catch you by surprise and unlikely alliances will be formed. Some confessions I have to make about the book: I'm beginning to like Jackal than I'm willing to admit. He's cocky, evil and ruthless but he has this noble way about him. He doesn't kill without purpose and he's his own person. He's obnoxious but very entertaining and quite the charmer too. ** ""Oh, don't mind me,"" came an extremely sarcastic voice near the wall. ""You two go ahead and make out--I'll just sit here and bleed quietly."" ** I love that we get to see a new side to him very different from what we've seen of him in the first book. We'd have a chance to know him in a new light and perhaps change our made-up minds and perceptions about him. Another character I very much love - Zeke. Still the same sweep-you-off-your-feet charming, sweet, honest, selfless Zeke. He has grown, became much stronger and even more determined than when last saw him in The Immortal Rules. He has definitely proven himself more in this book and he came out more of a badass. Expect a lot of swoon moments between Zeke and Allie. I love how they're both so stubborn and fierce and determined. Even if all odds and common sense are against it, they have an undeniable pull to each other that they're willing to stand and fight for. ** ""Only death will take me away from you, vampire girl,"" he whispered. ""And even then, I'll watch over you from wherever I end up."" ** These two can make you feel sad, happy, defeated and heartbroken all at the same time. They will be faced with harder choices and tougher, evil villains. In The Eternity Cure, secrets long buried will be revealed. We'd get to see more glimpses of the past and know the characters in a deeper, more intimate sense. I admit there are some characters I had grown to like and respect and some I just want nothing more than to throw out the window and have the rabids have their way with them. I love, love The Eternity Cure! It haunts. It's brilliant. It's intense. And the ending! That was a perfect, cruel way to end it. I cannot tell you how much it broke my heart and surprised me. Now there's a perfectly good reason for me (and you) to want the third book now. I couldn't wait for Izzy and Eibhear's book, Izzy has been one of my favorite characters all along. I gotta say though I was kinda disappointed, the romantic element was a big let down. There has been build up to the Izzy Eibhear story for the last 4 books so my expectations were high. This book takes place ten years after the last one so Izzy is all grown up now and a general in Annwyl's army, Eibhear is part of a unit in Rhiannon's army called the Mi-runach, they are what the dragon army sends in when no one else will go, so both Izzy and Eibhear are bad asses, but we knew they would be. And that would be the problem...see Izzy and especially Eibhear were always the ""nice ones"" the peacemakers in that crazy family so to see Eibhear as a Mi-runach just didn't really work for me. They had more chemistry a few books ago when Izzy was a kid and chased Eibhear around to braid his beautiful blue hair. We didn't even see ""the claiming"" and the two of them had endless bickering not conflict so the romance part just wasn't as good as some of the others. While there is a ton of action that had me turning pages to see what comes next, this was also a transition book setting up for the next installments as the children are almost all grown up. The twins are 18 and Rhi is 16 and there were a lot of new characters introduced in this book. The usual snark, bickering and name calling was present and as always had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion I really look forward to the next books to see what becomes of the children since they have all gone in different directions. They were monsters as toddlers so they should make for some very scary adults. Lots of twists and turns and suspense. Alot of new things with Kylie that really add to the excitement as well. There is only one thing I would have changed in the book. I've never been much of a Tucker fan; I've always liked Christian a lot better. Tucker just seemed too perfect and Christian was always the underdog who was mistreated even when it seemed like he would win. So many things get wrapped up in this book. Everyone's purpose seems to be fulfilled and we learn some interesting things about some of the characters. We get a very heartwarming seen between Clara and someone close to her, which I won't ruin by saying who and we get an epilogue that is set 9 years in the future so we get some closer. However, there is something that we don't get which is why this was marked down from 5 to 4 stars and I'm hoping that maybe someday down the road we'll get it. Charlaine, I couldn't agree more. There is just something about Jeaniene Frost that is no bulls***, easy, fun, and always filled with betrayals and redemption. She holds true to her characters through and through, and there is always a learning curve, her characters constantly evolving. She is the one author that I read just as much for the urban fantasy, mystery as I do her main couple. In some books, I just want to see the romance, but Frost envelops her reader so well, that you don't end up missing anything, just her next book because the read always ends too soon. I have noticed the font size increase in the Vlad books, because they seem to be shorter than Cat and Bones which makes me sad, but I still run out and get them the day of. If you have never started Cat and Bones, start their journey from the beginning and work your way to Vlad and Leila. As for the story in this particular installment, it was fast-paced and left as many questions as answers. Vlad and Leila are really perfect for each other and I love that we never see Vlad as a sappy love struck puppy. He's a pompous ass and that just won't change. It's fantastic and we love him anyway. They consisted of her exploration of her deepening feelings for Johnny, a werewolf and supposed King of the Wolves, her elderly witch grandmother that lives with her, her new relationship with young Beverly, her deceased friends daughter, the Eximium and her nomination as High Priestess, the fairies, Menessos and of course her acceptance of her destiny as the Lustrata. The first of the book is her relationships with her family and Johnny, the second part is the Eximium and the third is the final confrontation with the fairies. What is it I like about this book? There frankly, is not a lot of action. She isn't a kick butt heroine that is featured so prominently in urban fantasy, but I enjoyed it. I think it has to be the characters and the storytelling, which are both very interesting. I like Persephone; she seems real, even as a witch. I honestly think that if I picked up any other book that had so many words crossed out or separated I'd go nuts. The editor in me just can't handle it, but for some reason I welcome it with the Shatter Me books. It provides a more personal experience and it's surprising how you can create tension just by pressing enter a few times. At any rate we're back into the thick of it with this one and things really heat up...in more ways than one. War, relationship issues, budding friendships, and of course the love triangle. We get to see more of the Resistance, how they operate and some of the interesting powers that the other residents have. One of the best things about this is the fact that it acknowledges the grey areas involved in human lives and more importantly war. Nothing is as black and white as we want it to be. I really enjoy the overall plot but this one felt a bit slow for me and I kind of blame that on all the attention given to Adam, who I personally find boring. He's a good guy, he's sweet and he loves Juliette but I'm at the point where if they are in a room together I immediately want them separated. I feel terribly for them both and the situation they have to deal with but at the same time I just don't want to hear it anymore. The surprising relationship with Warner is more my speed because there is more to it, there is more to develop and understand than there is with Adam. Warner is a bag of cats, he's rather pretty to look at but you can just see the crazy rolling off the guy...and you definitely know you don't want to open the bag but curiosity (and humanity) just makes you want to. That being said I don't necessarily want to see a full relationship between them unless some things change, but I definitely love the tension! Kiera Cass tries to portray America as a girl who doesn't come from a rich family and that having one glass of iced tea is a privilege. I just couldn't buy that or most of how America 'understands' how hard it can be when it comes to money because the book shows little struggle for her and her family. So many books have love triangles that don't work. It isn't realistic or reasonable, just boring and absurd. The romance in the book isn't any different, her emotions toward both the male characters are very predictable and boring. The Selection is beautifully written. For the most part, if it weren't for the writing I don't think it would have been as hard as it was to put down. The writing and smooth and enjoyable, it's hard to stop reading and I actually felt kind of disappointed when I had to put it down. The other selected girls are very mysterious which I really enjoyed because it fits with the story. I like that Kiera Cass doesn't put too much information about the girls in this book because I don't think it would have been as good if we knew everything about the girls or most things. Although I have a hard time believing America's story about being on the tight end of the money scale, I enjoyed the way that everyone is organized and put into different caste depending on their role and how much they can help society. I find that interesting to see how other people are viewed because of their job occupation. Overall, a good read. With not much adventure and a few surprises thrown in, The Selection is a light, funny read that left a small smile on my face after the story had ended. I finished Promised really quickly because I simply had to know how it all ended for Leon, Gaia and Mya. There were a couple of things that bothered me about Promised. Parts of the story started to feel repetitive to me. For example, how Gaia kept going back through the wall into the Enclave when she really shouldn't. That was another problem for me: Gaia kept making foolish decisions and putting herself in danger. She didn't grow into the leader I thought she would, although she did set things right for the Enclave and the people of New Sylum in the end. My other main concern with Promised was with Gaia and Leon's relationship. I hated that she sort of strung Leon along for so long. The relationship felt one-sided, with more of the commitment coming from Leon. I didn't understand her hesitance to fully commit to him, especially considering everything he had been through to be with her. I didn't like Gaia's lingering feelings towards Peter and Will. I wanted the love square to be dissolved more quickly than it was. Although, I was happy with the resolution of the love story. I could not believe how things ended with regards to Gaia and her ability to have children. That really broke my heart for her. Especially considering her career centers around childbirth! I did like that the ending of the trilogy wasn't your typical rainbows and unicorns HEA, though. I liked that there was some loss, which led to character growth. And Dani isn't willing to let anyone take care of her when she can take care of herself. Dani has to do everything she can to help save Dublin. And she also ends up working for a man she never wanted to be around again. Not only that but she has a half unseelie prince wanting her when she becomes of age. Dani has a lot going on right now, and she's still on the look out for Mac. I really enjoyed this book. However I have a few pet peeves. Like the fact that Ryodan is messing around with Jo, and Kat. It really bugged me. Because you get the impression that he is just waiting on Dani to become of age, but then he messes with the people she cares about. That just bugged me. And she is reluctant to go back to school. Surprisingly, however, Kasey is welcomed by a group of girls including a new student. Together, the girls meet regularly at one another's homes and form a club that focuses on self-improvement. Such is the situation that FBI Agent and Criminal Profiler Jace Valcheck finds herself in when she's abducted by the NSA of her parallel universe. It seems that her expertise is one they lack in the USA (that's the Unnatural States of America.) D.D. Barant excels in crafting a believable voice for our narrator, Jace, and handily utilizes her investigative and profiling skills not only to uncover the mystery alongside the reader, but to also observe and experience this brave new world. The world building is first rate and rarely does the author indulge in an obvious info-dump to explain things, instead relying on Jace's narration and interactions with the supporting cast. In fact, like any branch of the government that deals in secrets, often what Jace is told is a loose collection of half truths; leaving her to figure out how large a grain of salt she should take with the ""intel"" provided. What made this book so engaging for me is that not only does Jace work to solve the mystery before her, she also takes the time to discover things about herself as well. She engages in interpersonal relationships, banter, analysis, prejudices and even a bit of romance. In other words, Barant doesn't give us just part of a character, but a whole one. One with both flaws and assets. Further, Barant has Jace work within her limitations as a human in a supernatural world. More than once Jace is referred to as an ""unenhanced"" human by others, but never does she herself lament her status, rather she cherishes her humanity. Barant's take on the mythological cannon is an interesting one and he works well within the rules laid out. Vampires (pires), Lycanthropes (thropes) and Golems (lems) make up the majority of the supernatural element with a bit of magic thrown in. There is an expansion of the cannon in the last third of the book, but Barrant does a decent job of setting up the expectation for this bigger and fuller picture of Jace's new world order without it seeming too much like plot-hole-putty. My only complaint with this book was the ending. Barant pulls the pieces of the puzzle together quite skillfully, but the ending seems purposefully stretched to allow for continuation of the series. I'm not sad the series is being continued, but I do wish that Barant didn't show his hand quite so much when doing so.",0,0 bb7de9c4c25742ab2e884faf8d0df785,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,5757031,,,00:00.0,5,"Hunter's book, Skinwalker is all you expect from an Urban Fantasy--including the need to create a character and world that is different, uniquely her own, within the UF framework. Still, I will buy and read the next book in series; some on my favorite series have left me ambiguous after the beginning book. I'm intrigued by Hunter's supernatural ""magic"" systems. She'd killed the rogue who had been impersonating Leo's son for years and he can't wrap his head around the fact that Jane killed the rogue who killed his son; she didn't kill his son. At the same time she'd been rehired, this time to find and kill the rogue who is illegally creating his own vampires that aren't being restrained until showing civility before being unleashed on society. I found this second book held my attention somewhat better than the first book. There is plenty going on and emotions are much higher as Jane is not only trying to find the rogue, but witch children are disappearing. Meg's daughter is incredibly powerful at a very young age, upping the threat to them. This mystery is once again very complex with a number of twists; a much larger situation than Jane anticipated. The cause of the Fury was heart breaking and we lost some beloved characters in this section, some more permanently than others apparently. It was good to see Alexander step up and accept Prime in Max's absence. Max and Alexander's relationship is finally taken to the next level and it is good to see her have a little bit of happiness after the last two books. There are things I love about this series and then there are things I put up with because I want more of the things I love in this series. Of course, she doesn't know how to be a vampire, and the firsts chapters are all about her dealing with her inner-vampire and whining. I wished there was more action, but it was at the middle of the book that I started to get it. Gregori is hot, funny and a vampire. He turned Nina by accident, and now he has to deal with her. The first part of the book when she was describing how she came to be bitten was hard to take. She talked way too much about makeup and I couldn't follow all that well. He says he caught her sent and was distracted, wail he was watching her ass and did not see the Muffin her dog coming at him. Then he tried to remove the dog from his lip, wail he was still in wolf form, at the same time Marty reached to get her dog and he accidently nipped her; there by radically changing her life for the better only she would not realize it at first. He tries to come to her and explain what has happened and she thinks he is nuts but when she gets kidnapped and grows a tail; well sort of, she grows what is suppose to be a tail. She realizes that he is telling the truth and has to believe him, and has to ask for his help. She finds she is falling for this impossible man. He tries to force everyone to accept her and play nice. I love the fact the Marty dose not just run to him to fix it all she wants to earn the packs respect on her own without being shoved down their throats. Even though she knows Keegan just want to protect her she is not willing to just lay down and obey. But her biggest problem is Alana O'Brian she was chosen to be Keegan's mate, while Keegan had no intentions of ever making her his mate, she was very upset that this new ex-human is now taking her passion in the pack and in the multimillion dollar company she so desperately wants. I think Alana was a conniving B#*$%. I didn't have much in the way of patients for her. If it is not hard enough just trying to stay safe ,away from the loons who are trying to kidnap her , then trying to figure out how to fit in she has a big issue; she can't seem to figure out how to shift in to werewolf form the most she can muster is a small undignified tail. This stresses her she so desperately wants to fit in, to have this family life she has never had. I thought I was nice how much she wanted to just fit in, and how much his family accepted her and willingly took her in their home and life. It's going to be tuff but if she can survive without anyone kidnapping her I think she might have a chance. I thought the book was cute. I was nothing heavy duty but it was fun. Anyways, Owen's ex actually did something bad to Eva once upon a time, and now that Owen knows it he still wants to try to ""save"" his ex instead of taking her out. Seriously what the feck? At this point in the story there is no way she can return to her regular life as a merc. I cannot say much more, because it would be a spoiler. Let's just say the stakes continue to rise. A lot of Magic Bleeds is about Kate and Curran, and is less G-rated. The authors do a decent job of keeping this fresh and interesting, though the situation between them has been a long time coming. I wished there had been more of Derek, Julie, and Andrea and their stories. I have grown attached to them from previous books. Andrea has more show time than Derek and Julie. The authors have built an interesting setting where technology and magic blend, with emphasis on the magic. The characters are fun. The dialogue is great, especially Kate's internal dialogue. There are a lot of slightly contrived fight scenes that are drawn out more than is generally my taste, but all in all, I recommend this book for fans of urban fantasy. I love everything about these books - the characters, the action, the world building, everything! - it just all comes together to create what has fast become my favourite urban fantasy series. I think all of my reviews for this series tend to me doing a lot of fan girl squeeing and I'm afraid this one will probably be no different but I'll try to be at least a little objective. The pace of Magic Slays starts out a little slower than the previous books, that isn't a negative because it means the authors are giving more focus to developing the various characters and their relationships. Of course Kate and Curran have always captured my full attention, I love the way their relationship has grown throughout the series and there are some wonderfully poignant moments between them in this book. They still have their ups and downs and there are definitely issues that they need to work on but they're both prepared to put the effort in and you just know they're going to make it. I just can't get enough of seeing them together, their banter always makes me smile and I definitely spend a lot of time swooning over Curran. Kate is facing some interesting challenges from the rest of the shapeshifers now that she is Curran's mate, she is having to learn pack politics and she is constantly being tested by the other alphas who make up Curran's council but she handles everything they throw at her and puts them back in their place with ease. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching Kate kick ass and she does that quite a lot in this book! It isn't just Kate's relationship with Curran that is the focus of this story though. We learn more about Kate's background and my heart just broke for her when her world is turned upside down. I think we're going to be in for some interesting new developments once she has had time to digest everything. We also get to see a lot more of her friendship with Andrea and I'm so happy that the pair of them are now working together because they are a lot of fun to spend time with. We're also getting to know the new Derek, he has changed a lot from the young man that Kate first met, everything he has been through has left him with physical and emotional scars but he is a fighter and he refuses to give up. Although the pace is slower in the first half of the book the action is off the charts towards the end. Kate and Curran are literally facing the end of the world as they know it - you know it's got to be bad if the shapeshifters and the People are prepared to work together against a common threat! Anyone who hasn't already started this series really doesn't know what they are missing, trust me once you've read the first book there will be no going back and you'll fall just as madly in love with these books (and Curran!) as I have.",0,0 3592cd825eea967f53cf83a75d611388,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,6805023,,,00:00.0,5,"Gin, or The Spider, is a bad-ss chick killing the unfortunate people that crosses her path and humps the (few) ones that she does not kill with the same enthusiasm. The descriptions of said activities are in no way over the top but they are indeed graphical enough for me to feel that this is more of an adult book. Since I have relatively recently read the first two books in the Mercy Thompson series it is difficult for me not to compare them. Both have the same basic setting, girl with magic powers in urban fantasy setting goes on adventures. That is pretty much where the similarities ends though. Mercy wallows in her own perceived misery, she is week and always the underdog and the books are quite slow to get anywhere. Gin is really Mercy's opposite. Gin is a I-do-not-take-any-bs chick that frequently solves her issues by eliminating the people causing them from the equation. The book is good enough written. It advances the story at a decent pace. The story itself is perhaps not the most brilliant or original one that I have read but there is nothing really wrong with it and it serves as a decent enough reason for some action. The background environment is not at all as detailed and developed in this book as in the Mercy Thompson series though. Vampires, dwarfs, giants are there but mostly they just act as any other person. The fact that they are vampires, dwarfs and giants is almost just glossed over. Bottom line is that I enjoyed this book quite a lot. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than the Mercy Thompson books primarily because of the more straightforward action and kick--ss main character.",0,0 76040d185bf1b042c540c8286a225674,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,7164540,,,00:00.0,5,"Really, really enjoyed this one. It wasn't as steamy as the first one, but Gin has definitely improved from being a sassy assassin (hahaha, it's funny if you say it quickly) to becoming a woman who helps because it's right and tries to help by being Karma's little helper through payback to the bullies of Ashland. I was surprised by the twists and turns this book provided and quite pleasently at that. The events take place throughout a very short period of time, but so much stuff happens that it honestly feels longer than a few days. I'm glad that we got more scenes with Jo-jo and Sophia. We got to see different sides to all of the main characters and I enjoyed the banter and easy-going relationship between Gin and her so-called family of friends. I'm also glad that Violet and Eva somewhat became Gin's friends and I hope we'll see more of them in the following books. Gin taps more into her powers of ice and stone and her magic will do pretty crazy things in Web of Lies. And what would my books be without some romance? There's a hint of a new romance between Gin and a guy named Owen whom I adore *fangirl alert* Did I like detective Donovan Cane in book #1? Yes, the smexy scenes were hot! I just think he's a coward for not giving Gin a chance and judging her by her ruthless reputation. There is no way I'm staying on a shinking ship so I bought myself a ticked to Gin-and-Owen-happily-ever-after-land and that's where I'm hoping this ship will sail. Overall, it was a decent installment, I'm looking forward to next one which I'll probably start soon, if not tomorrow. Jessica is doing her best to prove to Lucius that she can be a Princess, but she's having trouble abandoning her American and vegan routes for a lifestyle of brutality and blood-lust when it comes to being vampire loyalty. She's barely eating and has begun to hallucinate and have frightful dreams from the stress. And then the unthinkable happens. Claudiu is murdered and everyone points their fingers at Lucius. With her husband's trial date inching closer and closer, Jessica is forced to solve the murder mystery before she may have to carry out her first vampire destruction...that of her husband. I did enjoy the mystery in this one. We were able to slowly watch Jessica bloom into a Princess with confidence instead of a scared girl that doesn't feel like she belongs. While I had the murderer pegged about half way through the book, Fantaskey made sure the tale was entertaining and full of twists and turns that I didn't fully expect. Jessica enlists the help of Lucius's most trusted ally, an ex-master assassin that turned to Buddhism and surfing to qualm his extreme bloodlust, and takes us on a really interesting journey of discovery. The characterization in this novel is what made it for me, though. It's told between four alternate point of view's: Jessica, Lucius, Mindy, and Raniero, affectionately referred to as Ronnie by Mindy. At first, I thought that this would be really confusing, but Fantaskey handled her unique writing style beautifully and used the alternating views to her advantage by slipping us every possible detail and hunch that she could. Lucius's speech, as always, provided a lot of comic relief, but Raniero's speech was ten times funnier despite his eventual seriousness. Mindy also played a large part in comic relief. Fantaskey wrote her specific chapters in a special voice that not only made you laugh, but had you feeling the intense protection that Mindy felt for her best friend despite the fact that she suddenly became a vampire princess. It was also really nice to witness exactly how Jessica transformed from the shy, questionable Princess to a vampire with so much confidence she practically already looked like a Queen. All in all, this was a really great installment in Jessica's story. The ending was satisfying, though it did leave me with a few questions. It makes me curious about whether there will be a Jessica #3 on the horizon. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a light, funny vampire tale that does stand out from many of the rest. However, you must read Jessica #1 and I recommend reading the wedding novella before reading this one. The novella truly helps to bridge the gaps between the two stories better. I liked the plot, the world, and the concept, and I even like Xander and Ky and their stories... I just cannot stand Cassia. I tried for three books to like her and relate to her, and I just wanted to punch her every time one of her chapters came up. I have no idea why, and it makes me kind of sad, because I know this is a good series. This is also an excellent conclusion to this series, so whenever I could forget about Cassia I really thought that the way the story is wrapped up is excellently done. Condie's world is interesting and exciting and mysterious and yet somehow so familiar. I think she does an excellent job taking her small world of the Society and expanding it into the Outers and the stone villages and everything else beyond that without spending too much time listing details. Everything is given as a memory or an event or a conversation, and it helps move the story along as well as introducing readers to new aspects of this complex world. I think this book had the best world building in it, since this is where Cassia, Xander, and Ky learn more about the world than they've ever known before. I kind of feel like most of the relationships are underdeveloped, and the only one who really grasps anything about what love should be like is Xander. He loves Cassia, not only because she's his Match, but because they were best friends in childhood and he admires her strength and courage and then was lucky enough to get matched with her! But at the same time, he comes to realize that maybe first love isn't everything. And I admire him for that, and for his journey to get to that point. It wasn't an easy one, especially in this book, but he handles it very well. I also really wish that Ky and Indie had ended up together, because Indie is totally morel likable than Cassia. Cassia is just so annoying and only does things because she loves Ky... and she just comes off as so needy that it drives me insane. I was also really excited that a lot of this book was from Xander's viewpoint, since we hadn't heard much from him before. It was interesting to get inside the head of a character who has been there from the beginning, but mostly on the sideline. I also loved the way that everything from the previous two books is tied together in this one. Oh, and I also enjoyed how the colors on the covers make total sense now that I've finished the series. With feelings that could have been viewed as rushed, I truly believe Jill's and Tristen's histories and duel-battle set the speed for this tale, intertwining their hearts as much as their ancestors intertwined their blood. Jill evolved from a girl who had no real personality to a young woman who found her strength, the ability to feel, and the answers she needed to takes the steps to move on. Tristen evolved from a depressingly haunted guy, fueled by a dangerous beast within him, to a young man able to trust in himself and the girl who stole his heart. In the end, both Jill and Tristen held on to a small sliver of the darkness that haunted them. The sliver of darkness they both held on to helped give Jill the backbone she needed and Tristen the ability to fuel his passion. I really enjoyed Jekel Loves Hyde. Jill and Tristen coming together via chemistry class was almost poetic to the `Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.' It would be only fitting that their distant blood to the two crazed characters would fuel their ability to be young chemists, Jill following in her father's footsteps, and Tristen letting his grandfather's memory push and infuse him with the ability to understand what he was up against. In a strangely-almost-dark-way, Beth Fantaskey made this quick story tragic. Yet, this story was slightly romantic in a not-your-typical-romance kind of way. She left no loose ends, answering all silent questions including those stemming from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The plot wasn't complex, but the story as a whole was. New information surrounding both Jill's and Tristen's losses came to the forefront several times tying up all but one loose end and even then the characters accepted that mystery. Never let down, Beth Fantaskey exceeded the expectations I set within the first chapter of this tale. The changes that she goes through are explained in the universe that Hamilton has created. Blake starts out in this series as an individual whose morality is largely black and white. As the series goes on, she sees herself turning into the ""monsters"" that she originally started executing. As such, her black and white morality is forced to go through changes. If your worldview was turned upside down by you becoming that which you had feared and loathed, you would have display significant angst as well. Add to this that her sexual mores are turned upside down by the onset of the ardeur, and you have an evolving character who will go through significant changes. This book has interesting secondary characters. This novel introduces the character of Micah. He is an interesting romantic liason for Anita. He doesn't display the cardboard cut-out traits of Richard. As such, he may be more well-suited for Anita over the long-term. Other characters undergo significant changes as well. One of my favorite secondary characters, Dolph, undergoes an anguished transition which makes for good reading. Anita's interactions with the secondary characters make the storyline. For me, the ""plot"" of the book is not the reason to read this series. This series has had interesting plots. However, this series is more of a soap opera. If you enjoy the characters and the universe Hamilton has created, you will enjoy this book. If you want well-developed, intricate plots, then Hamilton has written other novels which were better in that department (see Obsidian Butterfly). However, they have pretty much all have been forgotten as well. Of course, these now mostly forgotten flaws can still pull a reader out of the story when reading. Because of this, I kept debating whether to settle on a four or a five. Still, even with the teetering rating, I would say that The Lunatic Cafe is worth a read. First off, it's nice to get to see more of the lycanthropes in the Anita Blake universe. Before you ask, I like seeing my werewolves monstrous -- and Laurell K. Hamilton delivers. Are they the most terrifying werebeastie out there? No. Not even close. Yet Hamilton still manages to show us a savage side to these creatures while also having many try to maintain their humanity. Well, what about the plot? It's no Agatha Christie mystery, but it's not as bad as Guilty Pleasures where Anita only figured it out after the bad guy told her. In The Lunatic Cafe, we get more of a mix. Anita does figure out some things on her own so *golf clap* Okay, I may be a little harsh. Although Anita helps the police with preternatural type of information, she is not a dectective so it makes sense that she is going to miss a few things. Still it can be quite annoying when the protaginist is simply told the evil plan. So The Lunatic Cafe may not have the strongest plot, but it still contains several interesting characters, a highly entertaining world to play in, and a narrator with a good amount of sarcasm that is bound to make many readers smile. Of course, if you didn't like the earlier Anita Blake books, skip this one. If you enjoyed them, keep on reading! Some books I enjoy and devour quickly, others are slow going and boring with no substance or meat to them. Dead Reckoning hit the spot this time and is one of the better of the series. The reason this one worked well this time was because the plot had a lot more going on. I felt involved and anticipated the action that I knew was going to come. Seeing Eric in warrior mode, defending his turf, is always fun, especially when it has such a climactic scene. Some of the new characters, albeit briefly introduced, add substance to the plot. Reading about 2,000 year old vampires, vampires with immense speed and strength, is always more fun than reading about a baby vampire coming in to their strength and speed. No, this is not the beginning of a lame joke but the beginning of a great book. And I totally loved it! In order to have her shunning rescinded and to gain her life back, Rachel has to attend the annual witch convention in San Francisco and defend herself for using black magic. But as she soon finds out, that's not as easy as it looks. The Coven doesn't hesitate to use all means necessary to stop her. After she finds herself on the no-fly list, Rachel is forced to accept Trent's offer to ride with him through the continent. Trent has 3 days to complete a mysterious elf quest that he doesn't wanna speak of and needs Rachel to protect him. And so the journey begins. Chased by elven assassins trying to stop Trent and by the Coven trying to stop Rachel, every mile becomes a fight for their lives. As if the trail of dead bodies, wrecked cars and destroyed national monuments left behind was not enough, something unimaginable happens - a demon able to walk in the sun. And this time it was not Rachel who releases him, but Trent himself. Ku'Sox was an ancient attempt of the demons to fight the elves. Created by genetic manipulation and demon magic, he had become so dangerous for every race that the demons were forced to use all their collective sources to stop him. And now he is released again and destroying everything. I loved this book. It was the perfect combination of action-packed scenes and character development. Rachel starts to see the other side of Trent. In fact she is attracted to him more and more. Could he really be more than the politician, more than the powerful biodrug lord, more than a man not hesitating to kill in order to gain what he wants? Dare she trust him with her life? Risk everything - her home, her friends, her entire existence if she chooses wrong? And in the end, her final fate lays in his hands. But this time, nothing will be the same again. This book was a roller coaster, not giving us a moment to catch our breathe. We see Rachel fighting the wild, dangerous and uncontrollable elven magic in order to save Trent's life, trying to clear her name in the process and yet failing because of a person close to her and in the end she is forced not only to accept her true origin but fight hard to prove it. Rachel finally sees that nothing is black or white, in fact it never has been. I loved that we could see more of the life in the ever-after and especially more about her demon teacher Al. We see his weaknesses and we see his loyalty to Rachel. It might be twisted and wicked, but it is loyalty nonetheless. To my greatest pleasure, Rachel also realizes that she and Pierce can never be together, that he will never accept her for what she really is. I never liked him anyway :-) In the end, Trent gives Rachel the biggest gift - a possibility to choose her own path, without being forced to any direction. And she did choose. I might not like her choice but she deserved the chance. And knowing her habit of always getting into trouble, I have a feeling that the peace will not last long :-) And that's what we all love about this serie!",0,0 6b2ba135b1436861211568bb00c1e6f8,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,6739626,,,00:00.0,5,"There are few series that have captured me the way this one has. I've been thinking about this review for over a week, and I'm afraid the only way I can explain is in fractured points. I love that Harrison throws us directly into the action. We're mere pages into the book when things start to go south for Rachel. This isn't one of those series you can just jump into at any point and understand. And that's perfectly alright. If you *do* jump in without reading the books before, Harrison is adept at weaving in the relevant back story without it feeling ham-fisted, forced, or completely out of place. It's also a nice reminder for when there's a year or more between the reading of volumes. I love that Rachel is far from perfect. She repeats her mistakes. She has questionable taste in men (though I happen to like Pierce). She's protective of others to a fault. She has irrational attachments. She'll push forward with plans she should know won't work. She sometimes trusts in the wrong people. And she has an infuriating stubborn streak, not to mention her inability to see in shades of gray instead of black and white. Even though she sees that white magic can be just as dangerous as black, she still treats black magic (and those that practice it) as the scum on the bottom of her shoe. But a lot of the enjoyment of this series is watching what she does and then yelling at her for it. I wouldn't have her any other way. I love Trent Kalamack. Yes, the ruthless, conniving elf is one of my favorite characters, even more than Ivy. His relationship with Rachel has many levels, and I'm not sure either of them really understand it. But he won't rest easy until she's under his thumb. I've even developed a certain amount of respect for the demon Al. Most of all, I love Rachel's fight. Let me count the ways: 1. You are full of rich, conflicted, and complicated characters. Your good guys are just a little bad, and your bad guys are just a little good, which makes everyone a lovely shade of grey. A reader can find themselves wondering if a demon or ruthless business man are really all *that* bad. 2. You are full of rich, conflicted, and complicated relationships. In real life, there are layers to relationships, and Harrison knows how to show it in her novels. Rachel and Ivy are more than partners. They're best friends, and feel a deep loyalty to each other, often without thinking of the consequences to themselves (or thinking of them, and deciding they don't matter). Jenks has grown into much more than the spunky pixie side-kick. He is a father figure packed into four inches of determination and love. Even Rachel's relationship with the demon Al has many levels, from resentment to respect. 3. You take place in an incredibly different yet familiar world. Harrison has managed to build an alternate universe of sorts, one which might have been the same as our real world if not for some diseased tomatoes. 4. You seamlessly move the major series arc ahead while giving us an interesting immediate concern. 5. You don't dilly dally with namby pamby background at the beginning of the story -- you jump right in to the action! One thing that Harrison is especially gifted at is working the background information into the course of the story without it being overly intrusive. 6. You build upon current supernatural mythologies without changing too much and without adding cheesy elements. In Harrison's books, the supernatural often feel more natural than the human. 7. You never ignore the past. Events that happened in the first books in the series still have an impact in the last books. This series is really one of the best paranormal series out there. The nice thing about this series is that's exactly how Rachel is, and it makes for great conflict whenever she gets into it with the demons -- which is pretty much every book, except the first one and the one with the werewolves (Which are both pretty demony, too, come to think). But the best part about this character and these books is that they focus on the dark part of dark fantasy/paranormal romance, which is often the most interesting part, and yet nowhere in these books does the main character revel in her own angst and Weltschmertz, or demean other people for not understanding the darkness in her soul; she has had to work hard to recognize her dark side as just -- dark. Not evil, necessarily. And as I have watched the character come to terms with this, it has felt like watching an actual person learn to accept themselves for who they are. It has made me sympathetic, and kept me fascinated, through all six books. In this one, Rachel just goes right ahead and becomes a demon. Well, not really, but she realizes that she has more in common with demons, in some ways, than with witches, and the full secret of her parentage and the magical inheritance, and the future consequences of her inheritance and what Trent's father did to her, finally come out. It's a great reveal, made even better by how badly Trent deals with it and with Rachel. I've had trouble with Trent in the past, because I've always felt that Rachel's hatred of him was unreasoning in some way; sure, he is a murderer and a drug dealer -- but come on. She lives with, and is in love with, a living vampire who was scion to the most evil being in these books -- and I include the demons in that statement. Nobody compares to Piscary, and Ivy did horrible things when she was in his thrall; certainly worse than what Trent has done building his criminal empire. And Trent's crimes are offset by the amount of good he does -- Ivy's crimes are only offset by her protection of Rachel. So I can see the personal attachment to the murderer who keeps you alive and loves you, no problem there -- but why so much bile for the murderer who kept you alive in the past? Anyway, in this book, Trent not only acts like a complete doofus, but he pulls an incredibly crappy move, selling Rachel out, only because he's too stupid to recognize the consequences of what he says. And this guy has the gall to shy away from both Rachel and Ceri because of the demon smut on their souls. Bah. Jenks is still the best character, and I love Bis, the new gargoyle, who I hope will play a much bigger role in the next one. The main story Dragon Actually was well written, with great characters, the action was wonderful, and at times I was laughing at the witty banter between the characters. The foundation was wonderfully laid for stories to come in this series. The best thing for me in this novel, was yes Annwyl and Ferghus fought the attraction, and the feelings they developed for each other at first but the inevitable relationship happened closer to the middle of the book compared to about 99.9% of other romance novels where it is drug out sometimes till the last chapter of the book. I just felt this gave the reader a look at the couple in a whole different setting, and perspective of the two as now one, from the way they engaged and interacted with each other, as well as dealt with other things going on in the book now working together, as apposed to they fell in love are together and don't hear much about it in future books. The included Novella Flames and Chains, I loved. You get a glimpse and a small dose of interaction with both Bercerek and Queen Rhiannon in the full length included novel. This changed my opinion of the two characters totally, I loved the back story of Ferghus's parents, and learning what the history was behind some of the comments made regarding them. This book held that vampire mystery that makes books like this so wonderful to read. The heroine starts having visions and she's not sure who is the vampire. She never believed in vampires before but she does now. I stole every spare minute I could from the rest of my life to ride the Fever ride, and it was fun, it was breathless, it was exhilarating. And as long as I don't think very deeply or critically, it was deeply satisfying. In Shadowfever, Karen Marie Moning tied up the many, many loose ends from the previous installments in ways that were unexpected and exciting. There are plot twists that will make you slap yourself upside the head in delicious epiphany. It will seem like a chorus of angels will sing in your head, and all will seem brilliant and clear and perfect in that moment of oh-my-god-i-FINALLY-get-it-now. It took me a while to remember who Vittorio was, much longer than it should have being that I've been reading these book almost back to back. It eventually becomes very clear who he is, but some sort of hint would have been very helpful in those first few chapters. Edward returns, along with Otto/Olaf and Bernardo. As I've mentioned in previous reviews, Anita tends to focus much more on her work and less on her sexual needs when Edward is around. Skin Trade is no exception. She and the other marshals race to kill Vittorio before he can come for Anita or continue his killing spree - with nary a sex scene in sight. In fact, the book goes a solid 375 pages before Anita needs to feed the ardeur. This will delight old school Anita fans and disappoint those who have come to love the more erotic side of this series. Personally, I liked the mystery first, sex later approach of this book but unfortunately when the clothes came off nothing else mattered. It seemed like since the sex had been absent for the majority of the book, the author felt she had to make up for it in the end. The sex became the story line in those last 100 or so pages, up to and including the final showdown with Vittorio. It seems as though Hamilton is quite taken with the word flavor. It's popped up more and more often in the last couple books and just about takes over Anita's thoughts and dialogue in Skin Trade. In this book alone it is used while wondering the ethnicity of a character, which species of shifter someone is, what type of psychic ability someone has and what branch of the federal government a character works for. And those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. It's just about constant and glaringly noticeable. More than anything else in Skin Trade, I loved the Las Vegas SWAT team and wished we could have seen more of them in action. Their team, consisting of men with both psychic abilities and tactical training, would make a wonderful basis for a series of its own, even without Anita and the other marshals involved. I very much hope to see more of them in the future in some way. Skin Trade isn't perfect, but it has great chase-the-serial-killer action. The return of the marshals and the addition of the SWAT team allows for a good focus on the mystery, weapons and the uses of psychic abilities in situations like these. Much of the Las Vegas weretiger stuff was more weird than interesting and the final get-the-bad-guy scene was a bizarre. It allows Anita to spend some alone time with Micah and also gets her a bit back to the zombie raising that seems to fade into the background in many of the recent books. Anita is a lot to handle, in life, and especially in this book. Her fear of commitment comes to a head while away with Micah, forcing her to voice all her crazy ""why would anyone love me?"" thoughts. Somehow Anita becomes both needy and distant at the same time. Micah finally starts to show a bit of what he's been thinking this whole time and the insight into his character goes a long way in explaining his calm demeanor. Anita and Micah are in Philadelphia on this trip, but just about nothing of the city is shown. The thing that really made this novella worth the read was that we finally start getting some answers - more than just theories - about what's going on with Anita metaphysically. Early on in the book, the Detective in charge of investigating her sister's murder gets killed, and Mac gets hauled in to the police station for questioning. She considers this an inconvenience--""My problems were so much bigger than this. It was an epic waste of my time.""--losing sight of the fact that when a veteran officer is found with his throat slit and her name and address written on a slip of paper on the body, it's entirely reasonable that the cops would have some questions. Sure, she's a big, important Sidhe-seer now, but she's in this battle to save the human race, and Detective O'Duffy was human, an innocent victim caught in the cross-fire. Mac has two opportunities (at least) to take the easy road and abandon the battle--once when her father comes to Ireland to take her home, and once when the Sex Fairy V'lane brings her to an infinitely more pleasant alternate reality in Faery--and though she's sorely tempted, both times she lets duty call her back to Dublin. To me, this represents her shift from being a pawn in the conflict, a person to whom things happen, to becoming an agent in her own right, wielding her growing power to her own ends. There are many who would use Mac to serve their own interests -- V'lane, Barrons, and Rowena (the old woman, briefly introduced in Da rkfever, who leads an organized chapter of Sidhe-seers) -- but Mac is determined to follow her own instincts and be no one's pawn. Karen Marie Moning's writing has also improved with this installment. I can guarantee that when I re-read Kiss of Midnight (notice I said `when' not `if') I will pay closer attention. With his background and his `gift' it's no wonder he never expected to bind himself to anyone. Seeing how much he unconsciously longed for it while knowing it was something he could never have was pure torture. Tess was a great character and there was a lot more to her than expected. Things unraveled slowly in Kiss of Crimson. There were twists and turns and mysteries behind a lot of characters that Lara Adrian kept under wraps for a fairly long time. I kind of liked that approach. It kept things interesting and I wanted to know what the big secrets were bad enough that this was a hard one to put down. Plenty of romance, plenty of action, a fair amount of heart break and even a few tears. Kiss of Crimson pretty much had it all. The only complaint I may have is that things were tied up kind of fast at the end. The outcome was inevitable, but it just seemed to come too soon after the climax for me. Kind of minor in the scheme of things but it's just something that bugged me just a little. There were a few new characters introduced in Kiss of Crimson and Lara Adrian set up the next book, Midnight Awakening pretty well. Tegan is the next Breed warrior featured and his potential mate is definitely going make things interesting - for everyone. They are wedded to their jobs as essentially killers, so of course they absolutely, positively, will never, ever, allow themselves to get involved with or care about a woman, because that would get in the way of their noble mission. So, of course, the novels chronicle the various warriors' futile struggles against destiny and true love. This first one focuses on the group's leader, Lucan Thorne, who is quite a prickly character (ha, ha, ha!). There are some differences here, though, and some new takes (or at least new to me) on the whole vampire mythology. First, in Adrian's world, vampires are aliens. Yes, you heard me, aliens. I still haven't decided exactly how I feel about that part, but at least it's original. I mean, is it any less believable that some of the other explanations? The first of them crash-landed on earth and were responsible for wiping out entire civilizations (ever wonder what happened to Atlantis?). They came to realize that they could mate with human females (because all of the vampires in this world are male), but only certain, extra special ones with a certain birthmark. Lucan is among the first generation of such a union, and with other warriors he was responsible for reigning in the chaos and figuring out how to co-exist with humans without slaughtering them. The special females are called Breedmates and usually have some sort of special, extraordinary ability. They don't get turned into vampires, but they share blood with their mates, and that keeps them young and virtually immortal (unless, of course, their mate dies and they don't re-mate, which means that they then would age normally), yet fully human. (Yay, they can still eat chocolate!) There is, however, apparently an equivalent to divorce in their society (you'll see what I mean when you read this book). There was an awful lot of growling and grunting throughout this book. One thing Adrian does emphasize is the animalistic nature of the vampires. They are not sparkly. They are not gentle. They are, underneath it all, killers, whether that killing is for the greater good (the warriors) or just for kicks and to slake their thirst (the Rogues). There is a very thin line between the good guys and the bad guys here, and sometimes those lines blur. To me, that's a little more realistic. I definitely plan to read the rest of the novels in this series because it was just different enough to spark my interest.",0,0 4f4b85040a90be2398eb645dbaf8a655,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,7370233,,,00:00.0,5,"Lover Mine is the story about John, and Xhex. I loved John and Xhex together, and I really did like this book. I just wish there had been more of just them. John is still upset about Xhex getting kidnapped, and the whole brotherhood is still searching for her. It's been weeks and most are already thinking she's dead... But John doesn't want to give up. He know's she's his female, and he just wants her back. Xhex hates what she's been going through and she feels like there is no escape in sight. But the brotherhood finds her, and she manages to escape her hell for the past weeks. But things don't go so smoothly after that. She and John are having a semi relationship with her trying to push him away as well. Not only that but they still have to go after the jerk who took her to begin with. Through out the whole book I feel like we see too little of John and Xhex. But we do see some of Darious' past, and in the end we find out what all of those past times had to do with the story. Then there is also the stuff with the ""ghost hunters."" I have to say I actually hated that these two things were in the book. It really drove me nuts, and I got some what bored with it. This book is full on non-stop action and of course I love how the brothers, the king and their shellan stay involved in the books. A lot of secrets about Rehv's family are exposed in this book; what he truly is, how he came to be and what he actually did to protect his family. I love that this series is has strong vampire males and their shellan are as strong as the men they stand behind and it's even better that there are moments that make you laugh out loud. We're meeting gods, sympaths and so much more supernatural creatures. Even though the were small moments, I love Lassiter and hope for some more time with him. As the brotherhood spice fades, we get those of other characters. We are also breaking that sexual barrier and I can't wait to get both Qhuinn and Blay's book! Now John Matthew. Hmmm ... He is getting so grown! Cussing and suggesting! I find it hard to believe this is the same tiny guy from 'Lover Eternal'. The mute who changed it all. I have always loved his character and channel every one of his emotions. This was a hard hit emotional novel for him. With the amount of scenes and emotion transferred, I would have sworn that his book would be next. Once again though, I don't mind. I love the momentum and build up to his character. Xhex is also on my good list now, so I can't wait for it to all go down! I feel like 'The Brotherhood' let me down in this novel. Even if I am not the biggest fan of Phury, he is the one with the biggest hero complex, that has kept this team together numerous times! While they made up for it in the literal end, I still feel that they failed as friends, brothers and family. Especially as warriors. Their friend was down, and instead of sticking to that code that they pledged in their 'man cave', they gave up on him and judge him. Therefore, I was disappointed and couldn't find it in myself to care much for the brotherhood this go. In fact, I felt disconnected. Maybe it's because of Phury's POV, but the outside vampire world was more appealing than the judgmental smoke of the brotherhood mansion. Now Lash, this kid is something else. I look forward to a lot from this character. I don't know how much havoc he will reap, but he has turned the story into another direction that is open for so much. I can't wait to see where this take us. The presence of the Omega is stronger than before so I say anything is possible! With all the drama and happenings of this novel, there is one major good. Not only is the woman he loves a Vampire, but his best friend in the whole world Vicious is as well. Butch and Marissa are a cute pair, but what makes this book great is really the interaction between Butch and V. The two of them aren't used to being close to people and watching the two of them let down barriers to help each other is really fun. However, once he went through the transition, the mistress of the house found much more interesting things to do to her new plaything. After a century of being used he was finally rescued by his twin brother, but the years of abuse have left him scarred physically, but more importantly his soul. In the previous book he was unable to bear being touched he was unable handle the emotions when Bella showed that she wanted him. Then when she was kidnapped he really went crazy. In the beginning of this book we find him still looking for her. We also start to get a glimmer of the nonwarrior vampires. Males are overprotective of the females in their care and some are willing to put them into vampire Purdah to keep them and the family name clean. As I am in the mist of rereading the series, I know where this begins to lead, which is one of the great things about the series. Many of the major arcs in the other books start as little arcs in previous books and often have ripples in later books. As for Zsadist, as with so many others who's trust and bodies have been violated repeatedly, he can't get past the thought that his body can never get clean, that he because of the abuse that he will always be unworthy of love. What I liked about this is that he didn't just get ""cured"" of this by his bonding with Bella, but that they will still have issues because of it, but together they will work through it. Which brings me to another reason why I like this series. While the warriors seem to bond almost immediately it is still not a destined thing. Even after having bonded with Bella Zsadist kept trying to send her away so she could have a male of worth. The fact that it is the choices of the couples makes this so much more than just a ""you're mine, we will be together forever thing"". I enjoyed the steamy connection between Con and Sin, and I even enjoyed the detailed explanations about the virus and the warg communities. I think what I liked the most was the raw, intensely honest emotion that was wrung from these characters. It can be difficult to capture emotion in a character, but the author did exactly that--in spades. Overall, the romance that slowly developed was believable and heartwarming, but certain aspects of the story caught my attention even more. Example: I really liked the side story of Luc and Kar. I wanted so much more of that, to delve deeper into their history, but it was pretty well wrapped up, so I am sure that will never happen. Also I really liked the appearance of the Horsemen. Since I was first introduced to Ione's stories via the Horsemen series, I am well-acquainted with them, and I feel like they added a great twist to the story and direction for the sister series, which is already well underway. I haven't looked into whether or not there will be more to the Demonica series, but I really, really hope there will be. Shade will fade into transparency for all eternity if he falls in love, so of course Shade's brother Roag tricks him into a mating ritual with Runa and he eventually starts falling for her. I really liked the interplay between Runa and Shade, as both were written as strong characters, and the ending was very satisfying. The demons in this book are tortured, sure, but they're not evil. Not all of them anyway. Yet, they weren't necessarily good either. I liked Eidolon, the demon doctor, right away. I liked the way he bantered on with his brothers and teased the females. I loved his sex appeal and all the layers there were to him. The demons in this book have very interesting histories of how they were created and basically ""raised"". They also have a quite intriguing take on where ""hell"" really is and how ""evil"" is defined. These were very strong aspects of the book and made me like it even more. Tayla has all kinds of messed-up going on about her. But it didn't take away from her character at all. In fact, it added to it. Parts of this arc were hard, because it is so sad to think of a younger person dying of cancer and possibly leaving behind five daughters it was so heart wrenching at times for me, but beautiful how family comes together. Things start to fall apart when a transfer notice unexpectedly comes in sending Georgina away from Seattle and Seth. Seth can't immediately go with her since he needs to be there for his family again they are put in a position that threatens both of their happiness for the greater good. Something seems amiss and Roman is going to help figure it all out even if he has to go against all of Hell to do it. ""You remember our talk about purpose and meaning?"" he asked me, the smile disappearing. ""Well, I think this might be mine. I think this is what I was meant to do, Georgina."" RM did a very good job of tying up the end of her series. Georgina and Seth proved yet again how much they are meant to be together and although I knew in my heart who Seth `really' was it was still revealed in a way that was unusual and unexpected. Carter is one of my favorite characters throughout this series and it was no different in this book as well. He was a shining light and I really teared up when he played Santa for the girls. It was truly one of the most touching scenes I've read in a book. Even though it was not all HEA there was enough that I was so happy for Georgina and Seth. Ah Roman.....his fate is unsure but love lead him to do what he ultimately did and I felt his character was completely redeemed from the first book. I would love to see a spin off series with Roman or Carter or hell both in it, I think that could be extraordinary. I really hope that RM revisits this world in the future just for some of the other characters. I am truly happy with the ending of the series and imagine the future as bright for G & S. This responsibility has left Georgina right in the middle of the wedding plans, making her absolutely miserable. She tries to stop herself from falling into a pit of despair, but she can't seem to completely avoid moments of depression. It is during her lowest moments that Georgina begins to hear a song that gives her a sense of being drawn toward an escape from her misery. These moments of song pull Georgina into a trance state in which her body and mind seem to function separately. In her mind, she is walking toward peace. However, her body is pulled toward danger when these trances occur. Who is trying to harm her this time? And why? To further complicate matters, a new Succubus comes to town who is determined to take advantage of Seth. Her target does not appear to be an accident either; she seems utterly focused on conquering him. This new presence causes Georgina to feel like she has to protect the one person who is causing her the most pain. It also poses a very important question: Why is hell so determined to claim Seth? I understand that Georgina's heart is still with Seth, but I've never been quite clear about why she is so infatuated with this man. Seth's character leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, he has never been honest with his fiance that her best buddy Georgina is also his ex-lover. What kind of man would keep that secret from his future wife? And furthermore, what kind of man would put his ex-lover through such an uncomfortable situation as to have her stand up in his wedding to another woman? A real man would never allow such a thing. This whole scenario makes him out to be a heartless wimp of a man. On the other hand, Georgina's depression is certainly valid. While I don't understand why she hangs on to this man, I completely sympathize with the pain she is feeling. This is a very emotional roller-coaster of a book to read. I found myself hoping desperately that she would give up this human man completely and move on to a fellow immortal like Roman. Aside from the personal drama, this book dives deeper into the visions and memories that Georgina has experienced throughout the series. As readers, we are not privy to any more information that what Georgina has learned. I certainly have had my guesses as to the secrets of her contract with hell, but we are still left completely in the dark as this story unfolds. She spends her days working in a book store and her evenings sucking life energy from men and women. Georgina loves being immortal and able to change her shape at will, but it has it's drawbacks. When she was dating Seth Mortensen, it was hard for her to get close to him physically because she was afraid she'd suck out some of his energy. Unfortunately, that isn't a problem anymore since Seth dumped her for Georgina's co-worker Maddie. Georgina is heart-broken, and has such volatile mood swings that her soul count has risen dramatically. But her demon boss, Jerome, is not pleased with Georgina's attitude of late and decides to punish her. He outsources her to a rival in Vancouver to help him with a local Satanic cult problem as well as do some spying for Jerome. But the kids running the cult seem to always be one step ahead of Georgina with their protests and vandalism. She knows the leader of the group is an angel, but she can't seem to figure out who it is. If she can get to the leader, maybe she can shut the operation down and get back to Seattle. Unfortunately, Jerome disappears mysteriously and with him, her powers. She is terrified to go anywhere since she isn't sure if she is still immortal. All the immortals lost their powers with Jerome's disappearance and it's weird seeing vampires walking the sidewalks in full sunshine. The demon's who do have powers are jostling for to fill Jerome's empty position. Georgina must rescue her boss and find out who is behind it, or all hell is about to break loose. On top of it all, with her now being mortal, she can have relations with Seth if she can maneuver around his girlfriend Maddie. SUCCUBUS HEAT, GEORGINA KINCAID, BOOK 4, is a multi-faceted treat! RM definitely pushed the emotional envelope with her characters in this installment and my heart did flip flops more than once. Georgina and Seth are desperately trying to figure out their relationship but it just seems they can't catch a break. All of Georgina's friends seem to be against her relationship, well except Carter, and she is starting to worry about Seth's mortality plus not being able to have sex with the one person you desperately love seems to be adding to the dysfunction in their relationship. But Georgina doesn't have a ton of time to deal with that because something is zapping all her power out while she is sleeping. She is also having vivid dreams of herself and a little girl that consume her waking thoughts. Erik isn't able to help but leads her to Dante a dream expert. There is also a group of Angels about in the city looking into something and using Georgina's apartment as a type of headquarters. Also, the imp that brokered Georgina's deal is in town and is trying to cause problems too along with Tawny the new succubus on the block. When it rains it pours. Some of the plot devices in this were predictable, that said I didn't care. I saw the ending coming and still it unraveled in a way that kept me completely engaged and emotionally on edge with a few surprises twisted in. The subplot for the entire series is still building and I have a lot of theories but none of them have been proven or dismissed yet. Even as much as I enjoy the supernatural mystery happening I'm engaged in the romance between Seth and Georgina. ""This is a, uh, friendship ring right?"" ""Yeah, don't worry. If I propose, you'll know it. For one thing, I'll be hyperventilating."" A sly smile--surprisingly sexy--turned up his lips. ""And it'll be a ruby."" ""Rubies? No diamonds? Too expensive for the old writer's salary, huh?"" He made a disparaging grunt at that. ""No, I just think diamonds are common, that's all. If I get married, it'll be because something uncommon is occurring. Besides, you wear a lot of red, right? I know how important it is for your accessories to match."" This was the hardest book in the series for me to get through. Not because of the writing but because of the heartache I felt for characters. I was happy to see that Seth didn't get scared off by her succubus nature because they make an adorable couple. Which is weird seeing how they can't be intimate but then again, when the physical aspect of a relationship is not an option the emotional side has to compensate. I love how open they are with each other and what lengths they are willing to go to in order to express their feelings while continually resisting the urge to jump each others' bones. Needless to say, this is no easy task for a sex demon and any warm blooded-male on the planet. I like how raw Richelle Mead's writing is in these books. The characters tell it like it is and cuss like sailors (bonus points). The dialogue is phenomenal too and causes the lines between fiction and reality to blur. Listening to the audio book version of Succubus on Top probably boosts the conversations' realism by a couple of notches as well. Georgina's long time friend Bastien is introduced in this installment. He's an incubus which is the male equivalent of a sex demon. His methods of seduction are a bit different because females can be a little trickier to seduce for a quick romp in the sack. I'm not sure how I feel about Bastien yet. There were moments when I liked him and ones where I really didn't. I'm kinda hoping that he doesn't become a permanent fixture in this series... Although, this seems to be the overall consensus among reviewers so at least I'm not alone! I can't get over how quickly I became hooked on these books considering that they weren't even on my radar originally. It was a fluke that I bought the first audio book and now I find myself committed to the whole series! The cast of characters surrounding her were a delight to get to know (with the possible exception of Warren, her somewhat sleazy boss at what must be Seattle's most charming bookstore). And in Seth Mortenson, Georgina has a most well-suited romantic interest. I admit that if my girlfriend told me that she had to sleep around to stay alive, and then told me she wouldn't kiss me longer than a few seconds, I'd have a rather difficult time wanting the relationship to continue. Leila was an interesting character. After an accident when she was a teenager, she was left with a scar down one side of her body and the inability to be close enough to anyone to touch making forming relationships just a dream. She has some interesting powers including the power to wield electricity and the power to see the past, present and future when she touches a person or an object. With her inability to live normally, she hides herself as she takes part in a traveling circus. Her powers are what draws her into the vampire world and ultimately leads to her to Vlad as well as the mystery behind who wants to use her as the ultimate weapon and get revenge against Vlad. Although I enjoyed the story, I did not enjoy it as much as I hoped I would or as much as Jeaniene Frost's other books. The first thing that disappointed me was that the story was not told through Vlad's point of view. When I first heard about this new series and based on the cover, I assumed the story would be told from Vlad. As I said before, he was always one of my favorite characters and I was looking forward to seeing inside his head. The other thing that bothered me was that the book seemed to be more about Leila than Vlad. Sure he was in the book as the main love interest but I did not feel that there was enough of him to satisfy me. Also, his personality did not seem as well developed to me. His relationship with Leila was a good start to the series but I did not feel it. With his supposed inability to love at present, the story was more lusty than romantic but I still did not really feel their connection. I am not sure if that was just me but that is how I honestly felt. The story was good even though I felt it was a little more serious than some of the author's other work. Leila's powers bring her to the plot against Vlad and parts of Vlad's past are exposed as they face an enemy. I did think that their powers and personalities worked well together and that in the next book they can be an amazing couple as well as formidable team. Overall, I liked the book but did not love it. Well, let's just say that things don't go quite as I had envisioned them. In Bone Crossed Mercy is still recovering from what went down in Iron Kissed so she's not her usual spunky self and unfortunately for her, things aren't really looking all that up either. In book 4 Briggs finally sheds a bit of light on one very important unanswered question and seriously, Adam Hauptman is just SO freaking awesome in this installment! Bone Crossed has a much darker tone than its predecessors and it also felt like a stepping stone to the next phase of this series. Mercy's finally solved her relationship dilemma but instead of running into her beloved's arms she's trying not to scream every time someone touches her. I felt so horrible for Thompson in this installment; she's hurting bad and unfortunately for her, the only cure is time. In other news, the reason why vamps are so afraid of walkers is finally becoming clearer and Thompson takes her newfound powers for a test drive. I've been anxiously waiting for this aspect of the story line to develop and I can't wait to see how much more butt Mercy is going to kick in Silver Borne! I really liked Chad, Amber's son. He's a brave kid who's similar to Thompson in a lot of ways and I loved their interactions. The child challenged her at every turn and I liked that Mercy treated him as an adult and also worked at earning his trust. Stefan lost a few points with me in this book; I found his behavior to be a little suspect and now I'm kind of glad that he was never a real contender for Mercy's affections. Better the devil you know... unless they are a vampire! The romance between Adam and Thomson is tender and sweet which was not at all what I expected from an alpha werewolf! Hauptman is so incredibly patient and understanding of Mercy's needs; it just made me love him even more! Mercy is such a strong, intelligent woman (coyote) and loyal friend. I love how real she comes across - a mechanic, living in a trailer; athletic - not too pretty as she describes herself, but charismatic in her own way, and strong willed. Her associations with werewolves, vampires, and fae get her into some scary situations. This particular installment gets Mercy into a particularly dangerous predicament and as a result, she needs some serious attention once she is rescued. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but the ending of this book is amazing. Briggs takes a very touchy subject and dances around it without graphic detail, but with enough gut-wrenching dread for the reader to appreciate the gravity of the situation. Mercy's reaction after breaks your heart. She withdraws in her coyote form for days. Again, how this is described is well done. When I first began to read these, I read that Briggs was compared to Larell K Hamilton and I suppose I can see that, BUT preface that with the early days of LKH. Briggs does not spend an exorbitant amount of time on the sexual details - leaving that up to the reader is better in many ways. I am thoroughly enjoying this series. The world around Mercy is opening up and letting us in a little at a time. In this book, we get a better look into the life of Vampires and all the politics that go along with it. Stefan helped Mercy in moon called and now she wants to return the favor. But Stefan's problem turns out being bigger than he first thought it might be. What's worse than a vampire or a demon? How about a vampire possessed by a Demon. Yep, that is worse. The things I like about Mercy: She is strong willed and quick to react. She doesn't sit and ho hum like some of the other characters in novels. She doesn't have super strength or Buffy moves. She takes martial arts and can hold her own in a fight but isn't a high flying kick ass superhero or anything. She is smart and uses her instincts to solve problems. Sure there is something a little magical about her but even she isn't sure what that is. She is not perfect, she has so many trust issues and is afraid that giving into Adam or Samuel will mean that she will lose her in independent self. Mercy is self-aware, kind and doesn't take herself too seriously. When push comes to shove Mercy pushes right back. Again the side characters are great. I really love Stefan, the vampire who is kinder than most but still a vampire. Getting a look into Samuel's character I started to like him more, don't get me wrong I'm still team Adam all the way, but I get where Sam's character is coming from and see that he truly cares for Mercy still. Adam, well *sigh* I love Adam. He is strong and protective, however he tries not to stand in Mercy's way and let her be her own woman and help her friends. He trusts and respects her, he seems to know who she is and doesn't try to change that. The Fae are definitely interesting, they are not the fairies of other books. They are dark, mysterious and seem to have a lot of power. Zee is my favorite, he is like a father to Mercy and I have to love that. Grumpy and cantankerous are just a bonus. The Demon possessed vampire story line was well thought out and scary enough. Mercy will go a long way for her friends. I really enjoyed this book, Mercy was awesome, Adam became kind of cool towards the end, the whole Samuel thing was interesting, i loved Warren. I could just go on about most of the characters The character development was really well done which really allowed you to understand the characters, and you could tell that every part had a backstory, even if it wasn't revealed quite yet. The plot flowed effortlessly, i finished the book in one sitting, you were kept on the edge of yours toes wondering what was happening and you just couldn't put the book down until finished. The only negative thing i currently have to say is that whilst i enjoyed the book and the plot, it did seem to drag on a bit. It is truly an wonderful book, that leaves you thinking. She is very useful, however, as she has been trained by her mother as a midwife. Soon, she realizes things are not as they seem, when her parents are arrested for treason. She then tries to rescue them, and encounters adventure and danger at a breakneck speed. I loved so many aspects of this book. First, Gaia, is a wonderful main character, which is so important since we see this world through her eyes. She is not whiny, and she is strong, resourceful and intelligent. Also, because of her burn, she is not perfect looking and has to survive in a world where appearances are very important. I thought the setup of the world was fascinating. Although, I do wonder about siblings intermarrying without knowing it, and why the Powers that Be didn't think of this issue. I also love all the puzzles that are in the book, and how Gaia figures them out. Lastly, I think it's interesting how her burn serves as both protection and as a mark of shame at the same time. For me, Requiem have so much going for it and then for some reason- something fell a little flat- but I still love Oliver's writings. As I said before, I actually enjoy Oliver's attention to detail and her beautiful action scenes told with ripping verbs and adjetives and the setting is what helps me picture this war between the Invalids and the Cureds. Essentially that is what Requiem is about. Everything is coming to a head now and Lena, the protagonist is stronger, smarter and faster. She hunts and she fights. Her best friend Hana is on the other side, cured and about to marry a heartless mayor. This book is told from Lena and Hana's point of view. This is what made me wary of reading the book in the first place. There is just something about two or more characters taking turns that really just cramps my reading. I think it is because I am wanting to continue the first protagonist's journey and so I suppose I am greedy that way. And it somehow fits into the framework of the story. Then there's the love triangle: Lena, Alex and Julian. I enjoy love triangles in books...if there can be a serious resolution that is. If you read ""Pandemonium"", the previous novel- Alex finds Lena kissing Julian and he is mad. Lena thought Alex was dead and so of course she moved on. Then in Requiem, Alex finds himself a little honey to occupy his time, but even still Lena knows he must still love her. Right? Meanwhile, my heart bleeds for Julian. He has fallen for Lena big time and he does everything he can to fit into the Wilds(remember his father was part of Deliria Free America or DFA) and he feels he has to prove himself. But then I wonder even now...does Julian love Lena for real or is it because she has a ""wildness"" about her- she is just different. Anyway, I like him. You have to read to find out who she ends up with and if America really does end up deliria free. I wish there was more to the story. Ethan Wate, said narrator, is an interesting character in that he badly wants to understand the situation(s) and do the right thing, but the people around him consistently marginalize him and treat him.......well not badly, this isn't Harry Potter after all, but rather dismissively. Their attitude becomes ""oh fine, if you must know I'll explain it to you"", and I can't decide whether that's a good story device or not. On the one hand, it creats sympathy for Ethan himself, and gives him a nobility that a lot of teenagers in these kinds of novels lack. On the other, it can create a situation where the authors can make up rules as they go along. The story is essentially a road story, becoming more a more a staple in YA fiction, along with the requisite 'lovers torn apart by events', which always has been a staple. Ethan and his Caster girlfriend Lena are having difficulties that Ethan, as I previously said, really doesn't understand. As in he doesn't get why there are problems at all. He's not obtuse, Lena just won't explain them to him. She disappears with the mysterious hybrid John Breed, whose motives don't seem especially good, and Ethan feels compelled to chase after her and protect her, even though he's not sure that he can. And that's the story really, Ethan searching for Lena. New characters include the aforementioned John Breed, as well as Liv, assistant to librarian Marian, in both her responsibilities. From moment one Liv is set up as the Mortal counterpart to John Breed, and she and Ethan do have chemistry. Back from Beautiful Creatures are: Link, still dumb but totally steadfast, and he has an arc in the story as well surprisingly; Ridley, the Siren who's nothing but trouble; Lena's various relatives, who range from complete evil to benignly crazy-ish; Amma, Ethan's......I'm not really sure what she is, his family retainer or something. She's less of a presence in this book, thankfully. But the real reason to read the novel is Ethan/Lena. Lena goes from mysterious in the first book to selfish in this one, and it's not a transition that favors her. A bit more/better of an explanation for her taking off like she did would have been nice. Not only does her now live in the mysterious haunted house and drive around his hearse, she is completely different than anyone at the school. And Ethan is about to find out how different. These differences trace back to an old family connection and are bound to change his life forever. I really loved the dark mystery offered by the deep South. The addition of the folk magic along side the very strict religious beliefs really added a lot of depth to the story. I felt that Ethan was a believable and likable character. The authors did a good job adding depth to the supporting characters without them taking over the story. However, my favorite character was Macon. When he stood up for Lena in front of the disciplinary hearing, I found myself cheering for him and laughing! On the whole, I really enjoyed the story. It really held my attention, and I wanted to know what was going on. Aside from the curse, I wish there was more connection between Genvieve and Ethan. Since she was watching the grave, I felt she had a little more stake int he story than she was truly given. Also, I felt the whole winter formal scene was a little too Carry-esque for my taste. Granted, I understand that it is probably typical high school, but the authors could have been more original. In addition, during the hearing, I felt it was unbelievable that Mrs. Lincoln somehow got her hands on records that I thought would be sealed because Lena is a juvenile. Although, considering how the whole Mrs. Lincoln fiasco turns out, that might explain it. Once the claiming was done, I really liked how the book closed. Marr ups the ante in this beautiful tale of love, addiction and choice. It's a companion novel rather than a sequel, focusing on three characters briefly introduced in Wicked Lovely (Leslie, Irial, and Niall). The plot has everything to do with the previous book, specifically it deals with the repercussions within the Dark Court of the cease fire between the Summer and Winter Courts. Just as in Wicked Lovely the intersection of worlds (faerie and human) revolves around relationships between a human girl and faerie male, sacrifice, survival, and terrible necessity. The novel remains as intense and tightly wound as the previous book. Marr has the marvelous ability to wind delicious threads of tension and inevitability into her novels despite all of the choices available. That's the thing that I love most about her books so far. The choices you want to make are never the choices available. Characters still have to deal with those choices, the decisions that they do and do not make, as well as the fact that sometimes they have no control over events except in the ways that they choose to respond. They make mistakes, poor decisions and there are repercussions. No one is all good or all evil, everyone, EVERYONE is a delicious shade of grey. Whether you like it or not, everything is about choice. Ink Exchange is slightly divorced from the ""human"" reality in comparison to Wicked Lovely. Where Marr builds a great sense of space and location, here she re-treads old territory, adding a few new locations that introduce the decadence of the Dark Court. She continues to have a deft hand at showing and not telling, weaving the tension and teasing the detail of plot out of the story itself without falling back on straight exposition. A great sense of dialogue, character voice, and descriptive prose meld together into a beautifully fluid, tense and tragic narrative. It's a more adult novel. Darker, grittier, more sexual, more violent and because we're dealing with the Dark Court it makes sense and is appropriate for the tone of the book. Some of the characterizations are a little off from the first book. Aislinn, who makes a very limited appearance, reads very differently in terms of age and personality. Some of that can be hand waved by the events that ended Wicked Lovely and the changes that Aislinn underwent, but it's jarring to read her in Ink Exchange. The ending is perfectly sad and bittersweet. Ink Exchange avoids the trite, pat close of Wicked Lovely and is all the better for giving us a sad, reflective ending that closes the book just as it should.",0,0 33c0172d267ad9775b898dc32e44d5d6,3693bb4f1062b659a354848cf11ca313,6961290,,,00:00.0,5,"FOREVER, by Maggie Stiefvater, is the final book in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series and what an ending it is! Many story lines intertwined through this book. We learn a lot more about Beck and Sam's relationship and the reason Beck bit Sam. Cole and Isabel's relationship was tumultuous at best, but darn it I love those two. The chemistry between them was electrically charged and I loved their banter. Isabel's father was in charge of the hunt for the wolves and the race to save Grace, Cole, and the other wolves from an unfair death. Sam and Grace were adorable as usual. Sam's unwavering love for Grace kept her grounded after everyone thinking he was the cause of her disappearance in the winter. I loved getting into the mind of the wolf in this book. Brandon is nothing like her boyfriend Nash. He is a fan of outdoor activities, of wildlife, and cares about other people and things. Nash, is rather self absorbed, focused on his sports, and wants to have the attention on him, all the time. A fact that doesn't escape Celeste and that irritates her to no end. After being totally ignored at a party by him, she decides that she's had enough and calls it quits with Nash. A fact that her friends don't like, neither does Nash and he begins to try and win her back, with her friends help. Celeste and Brandon tslk as she's leaving and they become friends, spending sometime together at his grandparents house, ice skating on their pond. But the moon soon comes and the consequences of the bite and a kiss from Celeste become evident, Brandon transforms into a werewolf. Celeste races against time to help him, but the only known cure (acorrding to legend) is a silver bullet. Deliciously dark, it makes use of fairies as they exist in folklore. I was in love with fairies long before vampires. And we're not talking cutesy, pastel-colored, wish fulfilling tinkerbelles with wings and trailing pixie dust. We're talking fairies like Melissa Marr imagines them. Fey who use glamour to hide, seduce, torment and disguise their inhumanity. The thing that I loved the best about Wicked Lovely is the tightening noose of inevitability. As stars align and events unfold, Aislinn, although presented with three viable options, is forced to make the only real choice that she can. I liked that Aislinn had guts and a will of her own, that she was battling her own shifting desires as well as the events that are changing her entire life. The Winter Queen is a bit of a caricature of a bad guy and there's no where near enough Gram in the story. She has all the makings of an interesting character but gets reduced to a plot device. Dark, sexy and tense, Wicked Lovely grabbed me and kept me. I have to be honest, it started off very very slow for about the first 200 pages I thought it dragged on a bit too much with the small details and inner monologue. It didn't pull me in till half way through the book that's when all the good stuff happens. I suggest to keep reading even if it has a bit of a slow start. Once you get to know the characters a bit more that's when you start being drawn in. I love the mystery and romance between Daniel and Luce. It's not your typical angel meets girl storyline. There a lot of intrigue to the character Luce there's a lot more to her than it seems and it definitely draws you in. I think the way their romance was portrayed it was dramatic and frustrating and sexy all at the same time! This book is definitely full of fun characters, drama, romance, and unexpected surprises. I've found lately that I'm often enjoying second books in the series(and so on...) more than the first book, I think it's mainly due to the fact that the characters are already introduced so you almost immediately jump into the story. Everything is back to normal in Bon Temps after the previous killings of ""fangbangers"". Sookie & Bill's relationship is going great and everything is peachy. Then another murder happens, Lafayette and once again everyone is trying to figure out what is going on. Sookie is then summoned by Eric to ""work"" in Dallas. She sets off to Dallas, with Bill of course, and things start to go awry. In Dallas there is a cult where their sole purpose is to burn vampires. A recent kidnapping of a vampire in Dallas puts Sookie right into the middle of this drama as her telepathic abilities are very useful. I absolutely love the ""world"" that this series takes place in. Since it is essentially a modern-day world, with nothing different except the fact that vampires are legal, it makes it almost realistic. I love that. I really do like Sookie. Her character is witty as well as naive, but not in an annoying way. And of course I love Bill. He really cares for Sookie and it's portrayed quite a bit. I also like how some new creatures are introduced, as well as we get to meet a few more shapeshifters and another telepathic! Thanks Ellen for the awesome series!,0,0 55eacebc4890c722c149bf2ce4316bea,d8c39b3b11bb2da1c1d5c39f49669dea,2421927,,,00:00.0,5,I can't remember how long ago I read this but I've never felt such angst reading and hoping for an ending to come.,0,0 a1016bbb98b35bbd579940100c0e1ebc,d8c39b3b11bb2da1c1d5c39f49669dea,14836619,,,00:00.0,5,"** spoiler alert ** Michelle Zink has done it once again, creating a masterpiece of illusion, light and love. I was very impressed with the start of this series, it was absolutely amazing. You just fall straight into the story and enjoy it immensely, wondering what will happen next. It was completely undeniable, the strength and pressure these characters faced, the evil that was trying to tear them apart. I can't say enough positive about this novel. I feel blessed just to read it, not knowing how or where it was going to end. Not to mention the love triangle.. oh man, sooo great! Helen's parents were just murdered when she showed up on Griffin and Darius's doorstep. She hasn't been through Enlightenment and has absolutely no clue what is going on, until they take her to a man who can explain. Helen is a Keeper just like the brothers; Griffin and Darius, she was created to protect other Keepers and uphold the laws of Dictata, an organization that controls the balance of good and evil. However the Legion is coming and with that, mass amounts of Demons, trying to overthrow all the good in the world. Will Helen, Griffin & Darius with a few other allies be able to stop them or will the world be thrown into an evil chaos and the Keepers along with Dictata be killed off?",0,0 976d8e7ff3470e1cdc07e0dbc50c4b8e,d8c39b3b11bb2da1c1d5c39f49669dea,15192067,,,00:00.0,5,"I really enjoyed this novel. It was the one I thought the whole series would end with since Gin kills Mab Monroe and almost dies herself. I can say that I love Gin's character, every book I'm more and more drawn to her. I seriously thought the whole series was over after this one but it's not. It takes an amazing writer to kill off such a long time baddie and then have the series continue on. Jennifer Estep is one of the best.",0,0
